Abysmal Dawn
Abysmal Dawn is an American death metal band from Los Angeles, California. Formed in 2003, they have released five studio albums. The group has had many lineup changes, with guitarist and vocalist Charles Elliott as the constant member.
The original lineup—Elliott, Jamie Boulanger (guitar) and Terry Barajas (drums)—released a three-song demo in early 2004 that drew underground attention and led to gigs with Exodus, 3 Inches of Blood, Hate Eternal, Into Eternity and Aborted. Their first full-length, From Ashes, arrived in 2005, produced with John Haddad, and received strong international press.
Abysmal Dawn toured the United States with Six Feet Under and Decapitated and played with Suffocation, Emperor, Immortal, Goatwhore and Decrepit Birth. In 2007 they began writing new material and recorded Programmed to Consume. After signing with Relapse Records in February 2008, the album was released on May 13 (May 19 internationally).
Their fourth album, Obsolescence, followed on October 28, 2014, via Relapse Records. The title was inspired by the idea of planned obsolescence, and The Village Voice called it one of the year’s best, nearly a perfect metal album. Abysmal Dawn released their fifth album, Phylogenesis, through Season of Mist on April 17, 2020.
Current members are Charles Elliott, Eliseo Garcia, James Coppolino and Vito Petroni. Past members include Terry Barajas, Jamie Boulanger, Mike Bear, Carlos Arriola, Mike Cosio, Ian Jekelis and Scott Fuller. The band’s website is abysmaldawn.com. They have been on Crash Music, Relapse Records, and Season of Mist.
